Why I Don’t Play Vanilla Minecraft Anymore (And What I Play Instead)

I’ve officially stopped playing Minecraft in its vanilla form. I tried it all before I stopped. Played hardcore worlds with goals and milestones. Even followed YouTube trends like beating the game without diamonds or armor.

I gave Bedrock Edition a shot too, playing with friends on Realms across different platforms. I started my own Java server. Honestly, I don’t even know what I didn’t try. But no matter what, it just didn’t feel fun anymore—not like it did when I was a kid.

Don’t get me wrong, I love the game. It’s one of the best ever made. But after playing it for so many years, everything started to feel the same. Even with Microsoft giving us constant updates that add new mobs or biomes, it still doesn’t bring that spark back—not for me.

I even stopped playing Minecraft for a year or two, I thought I was done with it. Then one day, a friend messaged me on Discord and said, “Have you heard about RLCraft?” I had no idea what he meant. He told me it was a modpack, and I was like, a what? He explained how it’s a bunch of mods bundled together to completely change how the game feels.

That was it.

After I downloaded RLCraft, I couldn’t stop playing. It was like I was back in school again—spending hours building, surviving, and exploring. I started trying other modpacks too, following that, came shaders, texture packs, and even more mods. I learned how to make modded servers and got my friends to play with me.

Eventually, I even started a YouTube channel just to show people how to install the same mods and modpacks I was using.

The truth is, Minecraft only feels fresh when I change it up. These days, I either load up a crazy modpack, install my favorite shaders, or at the very least, throw in a texture pack. Without those, I lose interest fast.

Mods and shaders just make the world feel alive. Whether it’s dragons flying over dark forests in RLcraft, or building a rainbow tech base in SkyFactory, modded Minecraft is where the magic is now. It’s not just about surviving—it’s about experiencing something new every time I log in.

If you’re still playing vanilla and feeling bored, I highly recommend checking out some of my lists:

Once you try one of these, there’s no going back. Trust me they are a big part of the reason of why I stopped playing Vanilla Minecraft.
